DeBrazza's Guenon Monkey
This male and female pair comes to Safari West from a private preserve near San Antonio, TX. Until now, the only non-human primates on Safari West soil have been our playful lemurs. We are pleased and excited to welcome the newest additions to our primate family.
Male Reticulated Giraffe Our newest arrival came from just down the road at the San Francisco Zoo. "Dozer", a male reticulated giraffe, was born on August 11, 2007 (he shares a birthday with our giraffe mover, John Roberts, who hauled him from SF). At birth he weighed 138 pounds, but now he's over 1160 pounds - and he's not even two! Dozer is a calm and welcome addition to our family and he has been getting along famously with the rest of the herd, especially Malika, our own August 2007-born female.
Bontebok antelope
There are very few bontebok in the United States. Safari West acquired one male and two female bonteboks from the Gladys Porter zoo in Brownsville, TX in order to begin our breeding program.
Dama gazelle
Two males and four females from the same preserve as our DeBrazza's Geunon monkeys can now be seen roaming our lands. We look forward to welcoming many new babies from this small herd in the future.
Speke's Weaver bird
Fifteen of these beautiful, golden, little birds have arrived from the Oakland Zoo. Weaver birds are famous for weaving elaborate nests. The Speke's Weaver can be found in northern and eastern Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya (mostly the central highlands), and northeastern Tanzania.
