Need to Know

We ask that you arrive and check in at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start of your safari. This additional time allows for restroom use and the tour guide assignment process.

Your Classic Safari includes a two-hour drive in rugged terrain in a rolling, open-air safari vehicle as well as a 45-minute walking portion through our aviary and surrounding areas. Safari adventures may not recommended for pregnant women.

Children need to be 4 years or older to participate in the driving portion of an African Safari Tour.

Children under the age of eighteen (18) must be accompanied by an adult.

You must be at least 45 inches tall to ride on the top seat.

We recommend that you wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes as we have pathways made of dirt and gravel. Depending on the weather a jacket and layering may be advised.

Please feel free to bring your camera to take as many pictures as you would like.

We advise that you bring a bottle of water on the tour.

Safari West is a pet-free property, and that includes your vehicle! We are unable to accommodate guests who bring pets or companion animals. If a guest does bring a pet or companion animal, we require them to reschedule their visit to a future date.

Gratuity and Tipping Policy

If you enjoyed your safari, feel free to tip your guide. They work hard and appreciate the recognition.

Please Note: If you reserved a private vehicle or made a group reservation for 10 or more, there will be a service charge that goes directly to your guide.

If you’ve ever dreamt of spending the night on the African plain, then you’ll love camping at Safari West. Our luxury tents are sourced from Lobatse, Botswana. The heavy-duty canvas walls and mesh windows lend a rustic air to an otherwise lavish experience. Our luxury safari tents have a variety of bedding arrangements from a single king to side-by-side doubles to a double bunks arrangement that’s spectacular for families. Whatever your particular arrangement, we’ve got a tent for you. If any member of your party has mobility needs, consider requesting one of our accessible tents.

Each tent sits atop a high wooden platform with private decks providing panoramic views of the property. Inside the tents, polished copper basins shine in the en suite bathrooms which also sport hot showers and real toilets. Polished hardwood flooring sets off the hand-hewn furniture, and ultra-plush linens adorn the comfortable beds. Each tent is even wired for electricity allowing ceiling fans in summer, heating in winter, and numerous outlets to meet all your charging needs.

This is a safari tent camp…it works differently than your normal hotel. We expect questions when you arrive, and the Safari West staff is here to help make your stay enjoyable and memorable.

Weather and temperature considerations:

The tents do not have a/c during the hotter summer months but have a ceiling fan. They can get to be quite cold, especially at night and during colder months. The right clothes make all the difference, we recommend bringing warm clothes for sleeping. Adult beds have electric blankets, children’s roll away and cots do not. Please bring WARM clothes for the night, even the summer months can get cold at night, and slippers for trips to the open-air bathrooms. Please consider showering the evening of your stay as early morning temperatures are at their lowest.

Noise considerations:

Please understand that the walls are made of canvas and offer no noise protection. Whatever is said can be heard. Please respect your neighbors.

Staying at Safari West is an authentic safari-style tent camping experience. During the evening, night, or early morning hours, you are likely to hear the incredible sounds of cranes calling, ostriches booming, or lemurs chattering. Lying in bed and listening to this wild symphony is an experience in itself!

Add Lunch and or Dinner to your visit! (Currently, due to limited availability, reservations must be secured by 48 hours prior to arrival).

Dine out… way out!  We would like to mention our on-site restaurant, the Savannah Café, offers lunches and dinners by advanced reservation. The cost of lunch is $19 per adult and $13 per child (4-12 years old). Dinner is $35 per adult and $17 per child (4-12 years old). For a quick refueling before or after your tour, check out the deli delights at Delilah’s Deli. Fine wine and brews are available along with soft drinks and juice at our restaurant and snack bar.

If you would like to make reservations for either lunch or dinner, please call us within 48 hours of arrival, you may also book online. Great way to extend your visit and meet new friends!

Please note – outside food/picnic baskets are not permitted on the grounds.

Service Animals

Service animals are a special category that does not include companion animals. Service animals are permitted to visit Safari West. However, service animals are restricted in all areas where our exotic collection is not separated from our guests by a physical barrier. Service animals may also be restricted in certain areas due to the sensitivity of our animal collection.

For any disabled guests requiring a service animal to travel, please call our main office at (707) 579-2551 to make arrangements during your visit. Please do call at least 72 hours in advance! Our property does need to plan ahead for service animals, and we want you to have a seamless arrival. Safari West is somewhat unique, and we would also like to ensure you have an understanding of our facility before you get here. Our staff is also able to answer all the access questions about our property. Our FAQ page has more information.

Cancelation Policy

Guests can cancel a reservation within 24 hours of booking and get a full refund. Outside the 24-hour window of the initial booking, we are more than happy to help you reschedule your exploration or provide you with a gift card for the amount charged so that you can reschedule at your leisure. Please note that your gift card is entirely transferable, should you gift it to a loved one or donate it to a charity or other organization. Please note, that modifying a reservation does not restart the 24-hour cancellation timer.
