Springtime is Baby Season!

It’s spring, which means warmer weather, pollen in the air, and a whole bunch of cute babies! This year has been no exception at Safari West, and we wanted to share a few of these cute new members of our herds and troops with you.

Starting out, we have the newest member of our ring-tailed lemur troop, Arlo.

Arlo was born on February 22, and for the first few weeks we only caught glimpses of him nursing on his mother Betty’s chest. At 2 – 3 weeks old, we started seeing him moving to mom’s back for a better view as she moved around, and at 5 – 6 weeks we’re starting to see him leave mom and bounce around all over the place!

In case you missed it, we also recently celebrated Otto the rhino’s 2nd birthday and announced some exciting news—Otto has a sibling on the way!

Our “Two is Better than One” celebration combined both Otto turning two and the impending arrival of a 2nd baby rhino at Safari West. At two years old, Otto is growing fast and already weighs about 2000 pounds, an impressive increase in size since his about 100 pound weight at birth.

Otto is not a baby any more, and while he won’t be fully mature for quite a few more years, he has reached an important milestone in his development where he will become much more independent as his mother switches focus to her new calf. He is known for being a vocal, curious, and energetic young rhino, and we’re excited to see how his personality continues to grow as he gets older!

As for Otto’s younger sibling, their due date is projected to be around August of this year! Otto’s mom Eesha is healthy and the pregnancy is progressing as planned, so we’re hopeful that the upcoming birth will be just as quick and easy as Otto’s birth two years ago.

Finally, our herds of antelope and buffalo have a few very cute additions:

Two gemsbok babies were born February 14th and 20th! They are often inseparable and can be seen playing together in their habitat.

Our herd of cape buffalo saw a baby born on January 9th, as well as a more recent baby on March 6th.

Finally, our roan antelope herd has three new babies so far! This antelope species often stashes their babies in a safe spot for the first few weeks of their life, with the mother intermittently coming to check on and nurse her baby.
