Remembering Kulula

Safari West is heartbroken to share the passing of Kulula the giraffe. One of our most iconic and beloved residents, she passed away on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at 21 years of age. Kulula was considered geriatric and was being treated for age-related ailments.

Kulula inspired generations of guests, staff, and conservationists with her headstrong spirit, captivating presence, and extraordinary story — first introduced to the world through the acclaimed Animal Planet documentary *Growing Up Giraffe*.

“Kulula was more than just an animal in our care,” says Dr. Nancy Lang, founder of Safari West. “She was family. She grew up here, and in many ways, she helped shape the heart of Safari West.”

One of Kulula’s most memorable attributes for our guests was her amazing ability to drool like no other giraffe. It even earned her the nickname of “Kudroola”. She was born with an overactive salivary gland, which was not a health concern—she just drank a bit more water to account for her drool. Most of our animal caretakers quickly learned it was wise to wear a hat when working around her, and many of our guides recall that Kulula was the first giraffe they learned how to identify as they dodged her drool on tour.

Kulula was fierce, embodying independence and strength, and never let anyone forget that. When she wanted to do something, it would happen and when she didn’t, there was no changing her mind. It was remarkable to witness her clever mind at work and watch her distinguished personality shine. She reveled in participating in training sessions and it was incredibly special to see her eyes light up when she learned new behaviors. Two of our animal managers, Nikki Smith and Erika Defer, worked with Kulula for the majority of her life; their passion for Kulula spearheaded her training which led to a notably deep-bonded relationship. Alongside the entire giraffe care staff, they ensured her world remained one of trust, dignity, and love.

She was an exceptional animal, a solicitous mother and an integral member of our giraffe tower. Our staff is grateful to have had the ability to work with her for so many years.
